Virtual Brown Bag History Program: Last Seen: Finding Family after Slavery Online

Speaker:  Dr. Judith Giesberg, Professor of History Villanova University and Director Last Seen Project

Once former slaves were no longer enslaved, they started the search for family members they were separated from.  To find these family members, "Information Wanted" advertisements were taken out by former slaves.  The ads taken out in black newspapers mention family members, often by name, and also by physical description, last seen locations, and at times by the name of a former slave master.  This is the story behind those ads and the database created that gives genealogists and researchers a new tool for telling family stories of separation and survival during slavery, emancipation, and Civil War.
