Lunch and Learn: Black Men in Blue: The Civil War, Ohioans, and the 27th United States Colored Troops In-Person

Dr. Mezurek will discuss how Ohioans reacted to the enlistment of African American troops, the Ohio Black community’s response to the national conflict, and the impact of their service. The focus of the presentation is on the 5th and 27th USCT, the two Black regiments raised in the state, with special attention given to the greater Sandusky area soldiers and veterans.

Dr. Kelly D. Mezurek is a historian whose work focuses on the Black men who served in the United States Colored Troops and Union navy, both during the American Civil War and in their lives as veterans in the late-nineteenth century. Her book, For their Own Cause: The 27th United States Colored Troops (The Kent State University Press, 2016), is a 2017 Ohioana Book Award finalist in the category Nonfiction. Mezurek is a professor of history at Walsh University in North Canton, Ohio, is a member of the Ohio Humanities Speakers Bureau, and she served on the Ohio Civil War 150 Advisory Committee.
